Spring Valley Bike Thief Nabbed Thanks To Help From Community Patrol

MONSEY, N.Y. - A 17-year-old Spring Valley resident was arrested for allegedly stealing bicycles in Monsey on Sunday with the help of a community patrol, police said.

The male suspect was arrested around 3 p.m. and charged with four counts of petit larceny. He allegedly stole four bicycles from a backyard in the area of West Central Avenue and North Gate. 

The arrest was made with the assistance of the Chaverim Volunteer Community Patrol. The patrol located and "engaged" the suspect ahead of the police response, according to police. 

All four bicycles were returned to their owners by the suspect, who was released into the custody of his father and given a justice court date. 

In addition to the bike thefts there were seven reported motor vehicle accidents that occurred on Sunday in Ramapo at the following locations: Parker Boulevard in Viola, N. Main Street in Hillcrest, Ash Street in Viola, Chestnut Ridge Road in Chestnut Ridge, Haverstraw Road in Montebello, and two on Route 59 in Airmont.

In total the department handled 125 Calls for service, 19 alarm activations, three fires, and 11 medical emergencies in addition to the one arrest.
